TCA
In lower concentrations, TCA peels can deliver a no-downtime peel to reduce fine lines, improve skin texture and even soften sun damage. In higher concentrations, well-trained doctors use TCA in lieu of laser resurfacing to soften acne scarring, erase crinkles and wrinkles across the face, and to reveal wholly new skin. Most TCA peels are a one-time treatment and require one to two weeks of downtime until crusting heals to reveal smoother, younger, clearer pink skin. Pigmentation changes are among the risks, and sun protection is an unquestionable must for life. TCA Chemical Peel $150
MICRODERMABRASION
A flow of fine crystals with applied vacuum suction results in a very gentle sandblasting of the skin, removing dead surface cells and clearing the pores of debris. Over time and treatments, pigment fades away and surface irregularities, such as fine wrinkles and acne scars, begin to soften. Treatment of the whole face takes about 30 minutes with very little discomfort. It feels like a light suction running over your face. You may be "in the pink" for a day or two afterward, but there's no flaking—it's all vacuumed away. Newer forms of microdermabrasion use high—pressure water and are very gentle, but not quite as effective. Prices range from $50-$100 per treatment, and they are often offered in packages.
BOTOX
There is no dispute. Both doctors and more than 3 million patients who underwent Botox injections in 2004 (as reported by Allergan) agree that Botox is effective in treating frown lines and crow's feet. Today, in the hands of an experienced injector, Botox can produce results that allow for some natural movement, yet still produce exactly the desired effect on wrinkles and furrows. Moreover, in the hands of a highly skilled injector, Botox should be a nearly painless procedure. While there is no downtime, results are typically visible in two to three days but may take up to a week to fully develop. Those results usually last three to four months or more. Side effects are rare, including a mild post-injection headache. But if you are like most recipients, you'll experience a blissful break from headaches. In addition, there is a minor risk of experiencing a sometimes reported flu-like condition, which could be related to the Botox treatment or a result of encountering a virus.
Botox is presently the only FDA-approved neurotoxin for cosmetic use; in the past there was Myobloc, which is no longer marketed in the United States.
